Wardrobe Staple: The Dark Wash Jean

The dark-wash jean is known as a timeless men's style essential due to its high versatility factor and classic appeal. It can easily be dressed up or down depending on occasion. Plus, they’re one of the few jeans that really help balance out your lower half to the top half of your body. This is why I’m such a huge fan of dark wash jeans — they’re premium in the world of jeans.

Keep in mind that your jeans should fit right, before anything else. And for that reason, I want to delve into a few more crucial aspects that you should keep an eye out for the next time you're in search of the ideal dark wash jean. Comfort, fit, and quality are so so important when selecting the perfect pair—to ensure you not only look handsome, but feel most confident.

Materials

We all love a good stretch in our jeans — that comfortable roomier feel is like heaven once we slip into them. But those spandex blended jeans also come with a few pitfalls. The downside is that they tend to stretch pretty quickly and won’t hold structure like the higher-level cotton blends will. This can cause the seat/buttocks to droop and create loads of room in the thigh area — and well, that’s never a good look. For that reason I highly recommend going with a jean with a majority cotton material whenever possible.

Slim Build

Slim fit jeans will fit trim in the chin area providing a nice taper down from the knee to ankle to keep you balanced.

Now to clear things up, this is NOT a skinny fit. It’s easy to get this confused, but there’s quite a difference amongst the two. Skinny jeans aren’t typically meant for most men, which is why I hardly ever recommend these to my clients.

Often times men who should be wearing a slim / tailored fit, gravitate toward a baggier fit to mask their thin-ness which never does them any favors. It actually spotlights how thin they are. For that reason, you’ll want to steer clear of straight fit jeans. These will be way too loose and won’t have that necessary taper from the knee down to best compliment your body.

Heftier Build

I can’t stress how important it is for your jeans to balance out your body. Typically heftier men need more room in the thigh areas which is why a straight cut jean will be your go-to. They’ll provide you with the room you’ll need to accommodate your larger build, while also leveling out your body.

The key is to avoid any excess fabric. If you pull on either side of your jean and find you have too much loose fabric in your hands (no more than 2 inches) go down a size or try another brand. Otherwise you’ll look much wider than you are and again— we don’t want that — balance is KEY!

Side note: Your jeans should fit properly at the waist without the help of a belt. If they’re a little snug in the beginning that’s ok, it will give after a few wears, providing you with just the right amount of room. Also keep the hem right around a half break so you don’t have loads of excess fabric sitting at the ankles. Take them to your tailor and have them bring up that hemline if need be—it won’t cost you much and will make a world of a difference in your overall appearance.
