When to Wear a Tie
Dressier looks like suits and sport coats are two ways you can elevate your style for more formal occasions.
I like to style my clients in hybrid outfits by combining a casual jacket with a tie, resulting in a modern and stylish look that gives off unexpected charm.
What I never recommend is for them to leave the house with just a tie and no jacket; it looks totally off and unbalanced.
A well-coordinated outfit should include both pieces for a polished and well-put-together look. As the day goes on, it’s fine to strip back pieces if you feel the need, but your look should never initially appear “unfinished.”
The best time to wear a tie is usually influenced by the dress code, place or the level of formality required for the occasion.
On the other hand, in more casual environments, wearing a tie isn’t necessary. Know the context of the setting before making the choice on if you should wear a tie or not.
Attending a cocktail party, for example, usually requires a suit and tie. For business casual, a more casual look doesn’t include a tie — although a tie can actually work in certain situations.
Whenever you're unsure about the dress code, find out what others will be wearing to see what would be most appropriate.
Remember to strike a balance and not come off too formal or outdated.
Always go for a subtly stylish tie — this way, you don’t look too over-the-top or “clownish.”
