Experiment with new techniques to upgrade your style game, so you can make your mark amidst the crowd.
The Right Fit is King
Meaning not too tight or overly loose, as finding the balance is essential for achieving a well-put-together look.
Paying close attention to how your clothes drape on your body is key to presenting a cohesive and flattering style.
Remember… ill-fitting clothing has the potential immediately ruin your entire style, which is why prioritizing tailoring and selecting sizes that actually compliment your body is paramount.
Keep in mind though…. the perfect fit not only helps you look better but also significantly boosts your confidence levels so you actually feel good in what you wear.
I'll give you a small example; wearing t-shirts that are far too roomy and baggy is a common mistake I encounter when styling my clients. Often during our initial meeting, I notice that many of them are sporting shirts that are at the least, a size too big.
I always, always, always emphasize that opting for a well-fitting shirt can significantly enhance appearance. Your tops should fit nicely and LIGHTLY hug in both the sleeves and body. This rule applies across the board, whether you're wearing a casual t-shirt or a formal dress shirt.
If you try on a shirt, and it’s overly loose or hangs off your frame in any way, size down or explore different brands to find the perfect fit for you.
2. Store Your Clothing Properly
Ever encountered the frustration of pulling out your most prized sweater only to find protrusions on the shoulders?
This scenario is all too common, and once these shoulder bumps form, there's no reversing things. To avoid this issue altogether, make sure you store all your sweaters folded instead of hanging them.
Be especially gentle with wool, delicate cotton, cashmere, and heavy knits, as these fabrics are better off neatly folded and placed on shelves or in drawers with a flow of ventilation. When hanging your casual and formal jackets, use sturdy hangers with broader edges. This simple switch will keep your jackets in shape over time. Avoid using thin hangers for jackets as they can compromise the curvature of the shoulders.
Dress shirts, as well as any casual tops, should be hung to reduce wrinkles. I always recommend sturdy ( thin ) metal hangers to maximize hanging space. These hangers are not only a nice visual compliment to your wardrobe, but they’re also more durable compared to the usual felt or wire hangers.
When it comes to dress pants, using bottom hangers with clips is fine. You can fold them lengthwise and then in half before clipping them to hang, or just clip at the waist as another hanging method.
As for denim, you can hang them like you do your dress pants, fold or shelve them — whatever method suits your space and preferences.
4. Wear the Right Accessories
A tie without a tie-bar reads incomplete and so does a blazer without a pocket square. Use accessories to your advantage — this helps to add visual interest and give you more of a “pronounced” sense of style. A good hero piece, like a sleek pair of black or brown sunglasses, a nice watch or luxe day bag can really help take your look to the next level.
If you’re wearing any type of LYFL (last you for life) jewelry, keep it simple — one ring or a narrow cuff is all you need to make a statement — generally all you would need is 1-2 jewelry pieces MAX for added style.
5. Grab a Fabric Shaver
This is such an underrated, but VERY important tool to have. Taking care of your clothing is crucial to maintain their quality. Regular wear leads to those pesky fabric pills forming on your favorite sweaters — it’s inevitable. A sweater shaver will easily remove any unwanted pills, loose threads, lint or hair so your outfit always looks clean and well-put-together.
6. Have Foundational Pieces
Every well-rounded closet requires pieces that serve as the foundation for a versatile wardrobe. Basic items like neutral-colored t-shirts, classic belts, a sleek pair of dark denim, stylish low-top sneakers, and versatile casual coats are must haves for every man’s closet.
For more formal occasions, owning a medium gray or navy suit, a crisp white dress shirt, a quality dress belt, and a pair of refined oxford dress shoes will be mainstays. These core items lay the groundwork for a polished wardrobe so that you look the part from casual to more formal scenarios. Once you have those down pact, you can then explore adding seasonal, or more trend-forward pieces that reflect your individual sense of style.
7. Hire a Personal Stylist
If you’re one of the many men who strive to maintain a stylish appearance but feel overwhelmed by the effort it entails, considering a professional might just be a wise choice.
A personal stylist can alleviate this burden by evaluating your current wardrobe, understanding your lifestyle needs, handling shopping tasks, and curating a wardrobe tailor-made for you.
