8 Most Overlooked Wardrobe Mistakes Men Make

Over and over again I see men making the same style mistakes — and it pains me because they faux pas end up completely ruining their look.

To ensure you steer clear of these pitfalls, keep reading to discover the "8 most overlooked style mistakes men make…" in order to you keep your wardrobe game tight.

1 . Wearing Ill-fitting Clothes

This includes all types of clothing, from gym wear, to every-day casuals, to dressier attire. You want every article of clothing you own to properly fit your body — NO MATTER WHAT. I can’t stress this enough. You never want to walk out of your house with clothing so big it looks as if you’re drowning in excess fabric. On the contrary, you don’t want to wear clothing that’s so tight the outline of your stomach or crotch is visible. Clothes should always complement your body and ensure you are nice and balanced.

2 . Dress Shirts Untucked

Collared dress shirts have longer hems in the front and back to stay tucked in your pants. Always wear this type of shirt tucked in. There are exceptions to the rule though. If you want a more casual / laid-back aesthetic, you can go for an oxford button down shirt and leave it untucked, no problem. Keep in mind you want it to land right around the middle of your crotch and buttocks area. If it's too long, it won’t look right, completely disrupting your proportions.

3. Too Many Bold Pieces

I often encounter numerous men who believe that a stylish look equals loud patterns, prints or colors. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The main problem with this is that it just ends up looking cheap. This is the formula I use when I style my clients: we start with one stand-out-piece (i.e, a printed or patterned shirt) and then we anchor the rest of their outfit with neutral colors (i.e., navy, grey or black). This ensures we never go overboard, and that they always look sharp and well-styled.

4. Extra Wide Ties

Many thin to average built men choose ties that do not complement their body types. Oversized ties make you look like a kid playing with your dad's tie. This creats an even slimmer appearance and comes off as if you have no idea know what you’re doing; not a good look.

5. Extra Long Ties

Basically, you want the two edges of your tie to land right at the top of your belt or the top of your waist band if you’re going sans belt. If you find that your tie needs readjusting, take the time to carefully re-tie it until you reach the right length.

6. Wrinkled Clothing

Wrinkled clothing is a definite no-go as it only makes you appear disheveled. Invest in a good portable steamer to knock those wrinkles right out. Steaming your clothes takes just a few minutes and will ensure you look polished and well put together.

7. Pants-Leg Stacking

I observe numerous instances throughout the day where men stroll around with loads of stacking at the ankles. Pant hemlines typically have an extended length so you can get them tailored properly. Never have extra fabric pooling at your ankles —it not only makes your appear shorter, but reads very unkempt.

8. Visible Undershirt

Wear a shirt that doesn't peek out. If you’re leaving the top 2-3 buttons undone, wear a v-neck or lower scoop neck shirt so you won’t be able to see it. Undershirts are important to safeguarding your dress shirt from sweat, oil, and deodorant, keeping it fresh and clean throughout the day - so wear it longevity. Just be sure it’s the right material and color, so you won’t be able to see it through your dress shirt.
